17.4.3 Education for SDGs in the wider community

Providence University is actively engaged in outreach and community education initiatives. These programs target a diverse range of participants, including alumni, local residents, and in-service teachers, with the aim of providing professional training, knowledge updates, and skill enhancement opportunities to promote lifelong learning and career development.

Continuing Education
PU conducts specialized outreach education activities within the community, catering to various groups, including alumni, local residents, and working teachers. These activities aim to provide the community with opportunities for professional training, knowledge updates, and skill enhancement, promoting lifelong learning and career development.
We offer a wide range of courses aimed at professional development and teacher qualifications. These courses cover diverse fields such as industrial technology, educational technology, child care, infant and toddler food processing, folk therapy occupational training, cosmetic safety, international certification, professional training, and assessment. These courses are designed not only to impart professional knowledge but also emphasize the development of practical skills, enabling participants to be more competitive in their respective fields.

USR
PU's USR(University Social Responsibility, USR) program is founded on principles of humanities and social care, aiming to create a people-centered smart society.  By addressing local needs, we incorporate professional knowledge and creativity to assist in solving regional issues, foster friendly relations between the university and the community, and establish effective cultivation of local care and identity. This practice realizes the university's social responsibility and expands its social influence.
Through partnerships with nearby communities such as Jinjiang, Xing'an, Caonan, and Nanshe, our university gains insights into the current development status of each community. After identifying communities in need of resources and connections, including elderly living, smart health, and green care, we provide in-depth support systems tailored to their specific needs. By integrating local issues with teachers' professional expertise, we lead student involvement and conduct interviews and exchanges within the communities. This process confirms and integrates the community's development status and direction.
 
  • For displaced people and refuges
Chin Refugees from Myanmar in Malaysia: Since the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, the Chin people and other Christian communities have faced severe persecution and displacement. As a result, many have fled and ended up in Malaysia as refugees. Without access to formal schools, many of these refugees establish their own community schools to provide education for their children.

Providence University’s Initiatives in Low-Income Communities and the Chin Refugee Learning Center in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Providence University, in collaboration with community NGOs Hara Makers and Anjez Art Project, focuses on supporting women and children in low-income communities and the Chin refugee learning center. The aim is to enhance the economic livelihood skills of the target groups while also boosting their confidence and sense of hope, helping to alleviate their disadvantaged circumstances. The university's concrete efforts include:

  1. Sustainable Services and Empowerment Courses for Low-Income Communities: Using a design-thinking approach, Providence University develops sustainable service and empowerment courses based on ecological design principles. Collaborating with local NGO Hara Makers, the initiative includes environmental services such as river clean-ups, plastic waste recycling and reuse, and the creation of cultural and creative products. This initiative aims to enhance the economic capacity of service recipients, raise environmental awareness within the community, and promote a deeper understanding of resource sustainability.
  2. Educational Programs at the Refugee Learning Center: In partnership with Anjez Art Project, Providence University conducts educational programs at the Cheras refugee learning center. These programs incorporate local natural elements to design green care, environmental education, and eco-creative courses. The goal is to empower Chin refugee women economically while also instilling hope and confidence in both refugee children and their mothers.

This initiative aligns with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
